LASIK

Tired of the hassle of glasses and contact lenses? If nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism are holding you back from living your best life, LASIK may be the answer you’ve been looking for.

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most popular ways to permanently correct common vision problems.

During the procedure, your LASIK surgeon creates a thin flap on the surface of your eye and then gently reshapes your cornea using a laser. This reshaping corrects how your eye focuses light, improving your vision.

The best part is that most people experience minimal discomfort and see clearly almost immediately. Many achieve 20/20 vision and get back to their daily routines within a day or two.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Thanks to recent advances in technology, more people than ever before are discovering they’re good candidates for LASIK, even if they were told “no” in the past. LASIK can help individuals with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism experience greater visual freedom.

You’re likely a great candidate if you:

  • Are between 20 and 55 years old
  • Have nearsightedness up to about -9.00 (with or without astigmatism up to about -5.00)
  • Have healthy corneas with normal thickness and curvature
  • Don’t have certain corneal conditions like keratoconus
  • Are in generally good health

Want to know for sure? Come in for a free consultation! Your eye doctor will spend about an hour with you, taking careful measurements and answering all your questions. By the end of your visit, you’ll know whether LASIK is right for you and what kind of results you can realistically expect.

The Advanced Technology That Makes It Possible

WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser System

We’re proud to use the WaveLight® EX500 Laser, which is one of the fastest and most advanced refractive surgery systems available in the United States. Here are some of the benefits of having LASIK with the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser System:

Every eye is different, and our technology accounts for that. The WaveLight® EX500 uses wavefront optimization to map the unique curvature of your eyes, allowing your surgeon to create a truly personalized treatment. This advanced approach preserves your natural eye shape and delivers sharper, higher-quality vision while minimizing side effects like glare, halos, and poor night vision.

The system’s PerfectPulse™ Technology and Smart Energy Control work together to ensure every single laser pulse is perfectly calibrated. The laser beam goes through three separate checkpoints, where the energy level is verified and adjusted if needed.

The WaveLight system tracks your eye position 200 times per second. Even the tiniest eye movements are measured and compensated for automatically. Just before each laser pulse, the system double-checks your eye’s position to ensure pinpoint accuracy.

WaveLight® Plus

WaveLight® Plus represents the next evolution of LASIK, designed to go beyond standard vision correction by delivering a fully personalized treatment based on your unique eyes. Using advanced ray tracing technology, this system creates a detailed 3D model of your entire optical system, allowing for a level of customization that was not previously possible. The result is vision that does not just meet expectations, but exceeds them.

WaveLight® Plus does not rely on a one-size-fits-all treatment. Instead, it measures your entire optical system to create a digital twin of your eye. This advanced model allows your surgeon to design and test your treatment virtually before it is ever performed, ensuring a level of precision tailored specifically to you. By accounting for even the most subtle visual imperfections, this approach delivers sharper, clearer, and more natural vision.

While traditional LASIK focuses on correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism, WaveLight® Plus goes a step further. It identifies and treats higher order aberrations, which are tiny imperfections in the eye that can cause glare, halos, starbursts, and reduced night vision. By addressing these factors, many patients achieve visual outcomes that surpass 20/20, with improved clarity and overall quality of vision.

From measurement to treatment, every phase of WaveLight® Plus is built around accuracy. Detailed data is captured in a single device, then used to design a fully customized plan that is applied with exceptional precision. This seamless process ensures consistency, safety, and optimal outcomes, giving you confidence in both your procedure and your results.

WaveLight® Plus is ideal for patients who want more than just freedom from glasses and contacts. It is designed for those who want the best vision possible. If you are over 18, have a stable prescription, and are looking for a highly personalized solution, this advanced technology may be the right fit. With high patient satisfaction and life changing results, WaveLight® Plus helps you experience life with greater clarity and confidence.

Oculus Pentacam

The Oculus Pentacam is an essential tool for the diagnosis and management of corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery. This innovative technology captures a high-resolution image of the anterior eye segment and provides information from the anterior corneal surface to the posterior crystalline capsule.

The images generated are three-dimensional rotating models used for corneal topographic and chamber analysis, providing precise measurements of the central cornea with extremely short examination times.

What Results Can You Expect?

We base your expected results on real data from real patients. Whether you’re nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, we’ll give you clear, personalized information about your chances of achieving 20/20 vision or better after your LASIK surgery.

After LASIK, most patients see as well, if not better, than they did with their glasses or contacts. While LASIK permanently changes the shape of your cornea and improves how your eye focuses light, it doesn’t prevent age-related issues like presbyopia or cataracts. These conditions will still need to be treated separately as you age.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Expect to be in our office for one to two hours total. The surgery itself can take as little as ten minutes per eye.

Shortly after you arrive, we’ll give you numbing drops in your eyes (there are no needles involved). We can also offer you something to help you relax if you’re feeling anxious.

You’ll be awake during the procedure, but you won’t feel any pain. When the surgery begins, you’ll be asked to focus on a target light while the laser reshapes your cornea. You might feel slight pressure on your eye, but the process is quick and generally painless.

After the procedure, your vision may be blurry, so you’ll need someone to drive you home. Most patients find they can return to their normal activities as soon as the next day.

Recovery Time

Many patients experience major improvement in their vision within the first few days after the procedure, often finding they can drive and return to work within one to three days. Most people notice clearer vision as early as the day after surgery, with only a few activity restrictions that we’ll go over in detail before your procedure.

Benefits of Choosing LASIK

LASIK can offer life-changing benefits that make daily life easier and more enjoyable:

  • Freedom from glasses and contacts: Enjoy everyday activities without needing corrective eyewear
  • Improved vision: Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after surgery
  • Quick and minimally invasive: LASIK is a fast procedure with minimal discomfort
  • Fast recovery: LASIK patients often return to normal activities the next day
  • Long-lasting results: These surgeries can reduce or eliminate the need for vision correction for many years

LASIK Alternatives

Not a candidate for LASIK? That doesn’t mean you’re out of options. We offer a range of advanced vision correction procedures and will carefully evaluate your eyes to determine the most appropriate approach for your needs and long-term visual goals. Explore the options below and schedule a consultation for a personalized recommendation.

  • Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), also known as PRK, is a laser vision correction procedure that works differently than LASIK. Instead of creating a corneal flap, ASA treats the surface of the cornea directly, using an excimer laser to reshape it and improve vision. This approach is often recommended for patients with thinner corneas or surface irregularities. While visual recovery is more gradual than LASIK, most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within about five to seven days.*
  • EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a refractive procedure that places a biocompatible lens inside the eye, working with your natural lens to correct vision. Unlike LASIK, it does not involve reshaping the cornea, making it an excellent option for patients with higher prescriptions or those who may not be ideal laser candidates. The procedure is quick, and many patients experience rapid visual improvement with minimal downtime.
  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a procedure that replaces the eye’s natural lens with a premium intraocular lens to correct vision. It is similar to cataract surgery but performed before a cataract develops, and is often recommended for patients with presbyopia or higher refractive errors. RLE not only improves distance vision but can also reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses, offering a long-term solution for vision correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally speaking, if your visual acuity is determined to be 20/20, you see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision sees at 20 feet. Comparatively, if you have 20/40 vision, you see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision could see from 40 feet. And, if you’re one of the lucky ones who has 20/15 vision, you can see at 20 feet what others would have to move up to 15 feet to see.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to prepare for your LASIK treatment:

  • Wear your glasses: Bring your most current pair of glasses with you. If you wear contact lenses, please stop wearing them before your appointment, as instructed, for accurate measurements
  • Plan your time: Expect to be at our office for one to two hours
  • Bring your calendar: You may find it helpful to bring your appointment calendar for convenient scheduling
  • Arrange for a ride home: You will need somebody to drive you home after surgery

There is little or no discomfort during the procedure. We use eye drops to numb the eyes. No needles or injections are required. After LASIK, post-operative discomfort is minimal.

Yes, you can wear contacts after LASIK surgery, but it is very unlikely you would need to. Our laser system, the WaveLight® EX500, is the fastest and most accurate LASIK laser system on the market and is designed to deliver better vision than what you can achieve with contact lenses or glasses.

Some patients need corrections for certain part-time or specialty activities and usually choose glasses in these situations.

We understand that your vision is incredibly important, which is why we use the WaveLight technology, one of the safest and most precise LASIK lasers available today.

No surgical procedure is without risks. Serious complications are rare, occurring in less than 1% of cases. Your LASIK surgeon will thoroughly discuss the potential risks and benefits with you so you have all the information you need to make a decision.

At Longwood Eye & LASIK, LASIK surgery costs $1,500 per eye. There are no hidden fees, and the price doesn’t change based on your prescription or level of astigmatism. Everyone pays the same flat rate. We also offer financing options through CareCredit, allowing you to make affordable monthly payments.

Results matter most. Be sure to research what other patients are saying about their own experience with your surgeon. Specifically, look for reviews about how they were treated before, during and after their LASIK procedure.

Also, pay attention to their reviews about their vision after LASIK. How well do they see? Are they happy with their vision? Your LASIK experience should be both enjoyable and effective. Taking time to identify top surgeons with outstanding patient care will help you achieve both.
